Win2K AS SMTP mail sending problem

| Hi All,
Can't work this one out. I have been happily using MS's built-in SMTP server to send mail from Perl, ASP etc. I can no longer do this!
My mail server accepts the message for delivery but all messages end up in the badmail directory with this error:
From: postmaster@SHIRAZ.vineyard.local
To: online777@netspace.net.au
Date: Fri, 21 Oct 2005 18:10:54 +1000
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: multipart/report; report-type=delivery-status;
boundary=" 9B095B5ADSN=_01C5D610B498BB3A00000003shi
raz.vineyard."
Message-ID: <A1XvpFVjC00000002@shiraz.vineyard.local>
Subject: Delivery Status Notification (Failure)

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
Delivery to the following recipients failed.

Received-From-MTA: dns;127.0.0.1
Arrival-Date: Fri, 21 Oct 2005 18:10:54 +1000
Final-Recipient: rfc822;online777@netspace.net.au
Action: failed
Status: 5.0.0
I am also getting the following entry ib the system log:
Virtual Server : The drop directory , for * could not be created.
I uninstalled/re-installed the SMTP service to no avail. I can telnet to the recipient POP server and successfully send a message. I can also telnet to my SMTP server and the message is accepted for delivery but as mentioned, ends up in the badmail folder.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

| Hi Al,
Thanks for your response.
No I haven't. I keep a list of the latest patches/fixes/updates etc that I install just in case of situations like this. But you have pointed me to something it could certainly be. Recently, my 2 default system GPO's disappeared! I had a bit of fixing to do to get things up and running again. It may be related as the 5.0.0 error is an access denied error isn't it? The SMTP service runs as local system so I wouldn't think it is that and the mailroot folder has the 'everyone' group with full control.
Thanks again
Steph.

| Does the drop directory exist? Check all your mailroot directories,
typically:
C:\inetpub\mailroot\drop
pickup
queues
badmail.
Is it possible your PERL or ASP scripts overwrote something in mailroot?
You could add the SYSTEM and CREATOR OWNER groups to your NTFS
permissions. SYSTEM should have full control, CREATOR OWNER should have
everything but full control.

| Hi Paul,
Thanks for you time. Yep - checked 'all' that stuff too. I've checked and
double checked the basic configuration. I just had a thought a few minutes
ago so I tried it. I created a new virtual server with the exact same
configuration, disabled the default server, and I can send mail with the new
server. I also noticed the entry in the event log is not there with the new
server on. As soon as I use the old server, I can't send mail and the event
log contains the entry mentioned. A corrupt metabase perhaps? Any ideas on
how I could fix this problem?
Regards,
Steph.

| When I had a corrupt metabase problem I solved it by removing and
re-adding IIS. We had a lot of messages stuck in the queues for no
apparent reason. This cleaned things up nicely. Backup and document
your configuration first.
