Exchange 2000 and Symantec SMTP gateway

Hi Folks,
We have 2 forests running on Windows 2000 DC which don't trust each others.
our exchange 2000 server sit on xyzmail.com while the other DC for logon and
users authentication is xyz.com.

In Exchange System manager->SMTP Virtual Server->...->Advanced Delivery tab
our masquaerede domain is xyzmail.com and FQDN is mail.xyz.com.ab.
Smart host is blank before implemantation of SMTP gateway.

the question is. In SMTP for Gateway 4.1 routing configuration portion.
I configured default routing as {mailservername.xyzmail.com} also tried
using our mail server IP address, the outcome was NO mail can be received.

as sending out of email, I configured smart host as IP address of our SMTP
gateway IP address, mail can be sent out but unable to receive, as the SMTP
for Gateway log indicated, email to our email address, user@xyz.com.ab relay
denied.

Any idea of what went wrong thanks.
Both Exchange server and SMTP gateway server are on the same domain .
Rgds
Jack
