The only Windows 2000 domain controller for domain1.com was demoted to a
standalone server and then joined to a different domain2.com as a member
server. Now I have an old defunct domain of the form GUID._msdcs.domain1.com
(as in 28c4da36-2993-46c2-ab6f-4edb581b2b1d._msdcs.domain1.com) buried
somewhere in the machine and I want to get rid of it.

I know the defunct domain is still around because when I open the Internet
Services Manager MMC, expand the SMTP Virtual Server, and look at the list of
Domains, I see the expected "servername.domain2.com" (the FQDN of the server)
listed with "Local (Default)" as the Type, but I also see a second entry
"28c4da36-2993-46c2-ab6f-4edb581b2b1d._msdcs.domain1.com" listed with "Local
(Normal)" as the Type. That extraneous Local domain, which no longer exists,
is not a SMTP Remote or Alias domain so it cannot be deleted from the SMTP
domain list. Its presence on the list simply shows that it's still somewhere
in the server's records; the server seems to think it's a valid local domain.

I've searched the Registry as well as every file on the machine for that old
domain string and I can't find it so I can't delete it. Can someone tell me
where the SMTP Virtual Server domain list gets its list of Local domains and,
even better, how I can track down all evidence of the defunct old domain name
on the server and delete it?

You may want to repost this in a more appropriate group, this one is
for NNTP/SMTP (news and mail) not domain issues.

Since I wanted to know where the SMTP server stored its list of domains, I
thought someone reading the SMTP group might know. I also posted in a couple
of other groups I thought might be appropriate. After I posted, I uninstalled
and reinstalled all of IIS and the mystery domains disappeared. So they must
have been stored in some file or registry entry related to the SMTP server
but in a way that couldn't be found through a text search.
