SMTP Cannot Route Messages to Exchange Server

The way our email service works is we have a local exchange 5.5 server that
interacts with a organization wide email service. For a few programs we have
on our servers they send out alerts/faxes/etc using SMTP. A couple weekends
ago the alerts stopped coming through and we find out that one of the
addresses the organization wide service has been taken offline. I have made
the appropriate changes in our local exhange server and the DNS, but still
the alerts are not coming through. Does anyone have any idea what I can try
to get this to work? Thanks
