Author SMTP messages staying in Queue

I am using the IIS SMTP Virtual Server (IIS v.5.0) to manage emails that I
am sending out from my websites. I have configured the virtual server to use
our SMTP Gateway as the smart host (both are on our DMZ). Recently we
started seeing messages sent from our websites queue in the QUEUE folder.
When I reboot multiple times the messages will eventually be sent but then
new messages will begin queuing again (or sometimes things will start
working for a couple of weeks then the problem reoccurs). When I look at the
event log on my web server I see the message:

Message delivery to the remote domain '<domain name>' failed for the
following reason: The connection was dropped by the remote host.

Can anyone tell me what may be going on here? FYI: All servers involved are
running Win 2K SP4.

Thanks.

Nancy

Found the article on another news server (gee MS is the biggest tech
company on the planet and my crappy ISP has a better news server, go
figure).

it has to do with local on acess anti virus scanning. it needs to be
disabled in the directories involved with mail relay. look in
c:\inetpun and c:\winnt\system32\inet ...

For anyone that's still having this problem.
I had this problem and it took me a while to figure out. The cause of
this problem on my machine was that I was not specifying a default
gateway on my IP configuration. Because of this SMTP had no Ideia how
to connect to the Internet.

To configure your gateway go to IP Properties and click Advance button
and enter a valid Gateway address.
