| I've seen a number of threads on this issue. While this code is pretty
generic, and there are a number of possible reasons why this would
happen (on Windows 2000, IIS 5), I found out a piece of information
that didn't seem to be coming up in the group.
In the System Event Logs, the SMTPSVC Source, logs out a lot of reasons
for errors when you are configuring your SMTP service.
In my case, all my e-mails were going to the Badmail folder, and was I
playing around with all the smarthost and relay settings that were
identified in these threads. So, I went to check the event logs
(finally) to see if anything strange was coming up, and I saw a lot of
informational messages, but no errors. So I started looking over the
Informational errors for the SMTPSVC, and I found, that when I was
changing the SmartHost settings in the IIS MMC for the Default SMTP
Service, I was getting an Informational message: "Virtual Server: The
drop directory, for * could not be created."
Earlier, I had changed the set of folders that the Local (Default)
domain was to put stuff, so I checked the permissions, and found that
they were different than the default folder set. I fixed the
permissions on the new Drop folder, and switched the Local (Default)
domain drop folders to the default Drop folder, and back to the new
Drop folder. I also went into the Default SMTP Virtual Server
properties and reset the SmartHost relay settings, went back to the
event log, and this message no longer came up.
I then retested my SMTP service, and walla, it worked! No more routing
to the Badmail folder or other issues.
So, if nothing else seems to work, check this out. Hope it helps.
