Author POP3 Mail delivered but not able to collect
Steve

Hi

On a win 2003 server I have smtp set up and working and have created
pop3 mailboxes for a domain.

Mail is being delivered fine, it is in the default drop folder.
However when I try to collect it with outlook or similar the mail
isn't picked up.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I know it's something I'm missing.

cheers

Is the mail being put in the mailbox folders OK? (those are the
folders mailbox\domain\p3_??????.mbx) where domain is your mail domain
name, and ?????? is the user mailbox name).

If it is only getting as far as the SMTP drop folder, then POP3 is not
processing the mail correctly.

Logfile entries? Errors? "Not being picked up" could mean a lot of
things, starting with you haven't configured Outlook correctly.

Hi Peter

Thanks for your help, the mail is not being put in the mailbox
folders. Its only getting to the smtp drop folder. I've looked more
closely at POP3 but can't see anything.

The eventlog shows everything has started as expected and is running
normally.

If you have any pointers I'd welcome them.

Many Thanks

Steve

Hi Jeff

Just FYI, there are no errors reported either on the server or from
outlook, which is configured correctly, outlook just isn't able to see
the mail on the server (probably because it's not getting to the
target mailbox and the problem is possibly with POP3 as Peter
suggested) but logs don't show any problems.

"Not being picked up" means exactly that, no errors are showing and
there is no entries in the logfiles that indicate a problem. I had
checked before I posted my question.

If you have any more helpful hints please feel free to hurl them my
way.

cheers

Steve

First, outlook (and all email clients) only gets mail that is in the
mailbox, not in the drop folder. Forget the email client for now.

If pop3 is not distributing mail to the mailbox folders, it is not
working. Sadly Pop3 from MSFT is a really poor implementation, it does
not log anything significant, logs to the *wrong* (IMHO) place (event
log, when the IIS system has seperate log files). POP3 logging is
worthless.

Did you try to move your mail store? Did you try to move the mail
boxes?

One thing I can suggest, is that you remove both SMTP and POP3. Then
(re)add them using server roles. Be sure to select the right
authentication model (local users, vs. AD). The process also prompts
for the (first) domain, so provide it.

Once re-installed add any secondary domains as needed.

Hi Peter

Thanks again for your help.

I haven't tried to move the store or mailboxes, just used defaults for
everything as I remember. I'm going to try removing/add both services,
I had of course been trying to avoid this

My hosting company have recommended a couple of free and commercial
mail solutions so I'll have a look into those for the future. Do you
have any recommendations?

Many thanks

iMail is popular and I've used it for a decade or so. Same for
Mercury Mail, though it's free.

Thanks Jeff, I'll look into both of those.

I've been colecting mail by hand from the smtp drop folder whilst I've
been trying to sort this out and I'd forgotten how much spam is
around. I've hardly seen any for ages and suddenly, without any
filtering, I've hundreds of useless messages to go through, all for
random.name@mydomain.com. I seem to remember reading that it is
possible to restrict mail that isn't to specific accounts so I'm off
in search of info regarding this.

Anyway thanks again for your help..

Steve
