Author Opinions Wanted: Index Server Companion vs. Index Server

I've been reading an article from ASPAlliance.com on a
product called "The Index Server Companion", and I had
some questions on this product.

1) Is it a good product?
2) Does it truly make Index Server easier to work with?
3) How well does it work with indexing PDF docs?
4) How well does it work with ASP.NET?

....and here are some questions I have about Index Server:

1) Once I use Index Server with Adobe's IFilter, how easy
is it to create an ASP.NET search app with this data?
2) Would our two sites be secure when using Index Server?
3) If not, what steps would we need to implement to make
our site secure?
4) Since Site Server was discontinued, is there an option
besides "The Index Server Companion" that can index
database data?

That's about it.

I can't comment on Index Server companion.

However on your other questions

1) its simple. Use ixsso over msidxs though for better performance.
2 & 3) indexing services and index server both respect file security, so
yes, users will not see hits that they don't have access to read. You will
have to enable your web site for windows authentication though.
4) have a look at this link.
