indexing server does not index the content of some files

| Hello,
Does anyone of you knows a reason why indexing server is not indexing the
content of some files?
The files that need to be indexed don't have the regular extensions but
instead they have extensions like .001, .002, ... instead of .doc, .txt,...
I've created a small test directory where I've copied some files in. every
file is multiple times in the directory, once with the .001 extension and
once with the normal extension.
The strange thing is that the indexing server only indexes the content of
one file, with .doc extension, but not all of the .doc files.
The option "Index unknown filetypes is switched on".
I would like to know how it comes that only that one file is indexed and not
the others that contain exactly the same content (I've just made several
kopies of that one), even if the extension is .doc.
How does indexing server decide to index the content of a file?
Can this be because of rights on the files (should be strange because they
are exact kopies)?
I hope someone can help me with this.
Regards,
Joury

| Index Server decides which document filter to use based on the file extension. If it doesn't recognize the extension (ie .001) and you have 'index unknown extensions' on, it will attempt to filter the document as text only (which won't work on Word docume
nts).
