NTbackup stops after 1st tape

NT4.00.1381 + SP6a
Ntbackup is called from command line each night and starts
OK.
After writing to the full capacity of the first tape it
should pause and request "tape 2". but it closes
ntbackup.exe
The log shows files copied are stopped unexpectedly.

Any Ideas?
