Access to MS support crashed my Win98 system

Dear Group:

Recently I accessed the microsoft NT chat site using a Win98 Second Edition operating system. When I clicked on an archived chat item I incurred a fatal error. What a fatal error!!!

My system crashed and I could not reboot. Checking the HD with a DOS emergency disk, I learned that neither the primary C:\ drive nor the 6 logical drives had valid formatting. This has caused me an enormous amount of difficulty for which I am angry wit
h microsoft.

What caused such a catastrophy? How can I prevent a repeat? Is the MS website intentionally toxic to Win98? How can I get back my files from this sick HD?
