Site Server General - trouble with start button

Hi all,

I have just joined the school and the server seems to be in pretty bad
condition its a Windows 2000 server. the start button does not work. I can
right click and go into administrative tools but if i try to go into active
directory a blank screen comes up.
Even the Task Manager shows a blank screen. I am confused what to do
next.The administrator working here earlieer advised staff not to restart the
server. and he is not contactable.
