Site Server 3 and WINDOWS 2003 server
|

| Hello,
I have been using Site Server 3 on WINDOWS NT 4.0 with IIS
4.0. I understand Site Server 3 has very strong "Catalog
Building" and "Search" capability. That's why we have been
using it for our web sites' search functions (we do not use
Index Server). Now Site Server 3 is no longer supported in
WINDOWS 2003 server, our web search program codes/functions
will have to be re-coded in another software? Is there any
other software that is supported in WINDOWS 2003 and has
the same "Catalog building/searching" capability?
Thank you.

| Quincy,
Actually, Site Server 3.0 is officially an obsolete product (see
http://www.microsoft.com/siteserver/) , and Commerce Server is the Microsoft
replacement (see http://www.microsoft.com/siteserver...rce/default.htm).
You might also want to review "
Migrating from Site Server to Commerce Server 2002"at
http://www.microsoft.com/commercese...cemigration.asp
Could you provide some detailed examples of the functionality you are
looking for when you want Site Server's "Catalog building/searching"
capability"? FYI, the web crawl search feature found in Site Server is not
part Commerce Server and you may want to review SharePoint Portal Server
2003. While Commerce Server comes with multiple search options out of the
box, web crawl (search) is not one of them. However, because of the need for
this in Commerce Server, Microsoft has worked with a third party search
vendor to provide integrated web crawl search for Commerce Server.
Check out http://www.mondosoft.com/cs2000. Mondosoft offers their enterprise
level search solution, MondoSearch, now integrated with Commerce Server.
Additionally, see Fast Search and Transfer ASA (http://www.fastsearch.com/)
for another CS Search integration vendor. For more information about
Commerce Server partners in general, please check out
http://www.microsoft.com/commercese...ners/search.asp
Finally, and depending upon the amount of files and text stored in SQL
Server, you may want to checkout SQL FTS. See "SQL Server 2000 Full-Text
Search Resources and Links" at

from more info.

John

| Since you mentioned Sharepoint Portal Server 2003, I did some research on it.
Looks like it is the product equivalent to Site Server 3 (not commerce Ed.)
Now my question is: Can Index server 3 do the search engine job like SPS
2003 does in terms of indexing/cataloging and searching functions?
Thanks.

| Quincy,
Q. Can Index server 3 do the search engine job like SPS 2003 does in terms
of indexing/cataloging and searching functions?
A. I doubt it, but then it depends upon exactly what features you want from
the "Indexing Service" (IS). Note, IS is no longer refereed to as "Indexing
Server" as it was in the NT 4.0 days. Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 is meant
to be much more scalable and has a better, more enhanced search engine than
IS did, as well as other features that you may want to explore.
Hope that helps,
John
