I'm unable to install MCMS on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition to
continue development in that environment.

1. Running setup.exe, the MCMS IstallShield Wizard halts and displays the
following:

"The following minimum pre-requisites have not been met. For help, please
refer to MCMS 2002 Readme. IE Web Controls is required. (needed by Server)"

The alleged Readme says nothing about IE Web Controls.

2. Running iewebcontrols.msi found in the WebControls folder, the IE
WebControls Wizard halts and displays the following:

"The specified path '' is unavailable. The IIServer might not be running or
the path exists and is redirected to another machine. Please check the status
of this virtual directory in the Internet Services Manager."

I haven't the foggiest what the specified path '' is. The IIS is running.

3. I've installed IE Web Controls manually following steps in README.txt
found in IEWebControls.exe.

(a) Z:\Program Files\Microsoft Internet Explorer WebControls
contains
Microsoft.Web.UI.WebControls.dll

(b) Z:\Inetpub\wwwroot\
contains
webctrl_client\1_0\
webctrl_client\1_0\images
webctrl_client\1_0\treeimages
webctrl_client\1_0\treeimages\rtl

MCMS 2002 installation keeps asking for IE WebControls.

I'll appreciate any reasonable solution to this conundrum.

Stefan,

I've downloaded "iewebcontrols.msi" you suggested.

Installation failed. The same old story. The IE WebControls Wizard halts,
saying:

"The specified path '' is unavailable. The IIServer might not be running or
the path exists and is redirected to another machine. Please check the status
of this virtual directory in the Internet Services Manager."

What path is it looking for?

Alternately, is it possible to install MCMS 2000 manually? Not that I'm
enthused about manual installation.

Hi Bill,

actually the path of the default web site or does the path point to an
invalid directory?
Did you stop or delete this web site?

Cheers,
Stefan.

Stefan,

We tried another install on a plain-vanilla Win2k3 Standard Edition
patched-up to the hilt with no other software installed. The OS resides on
the k:\ drive.

1. IIS Manager shows "Default Web Site" is running.

2. Default Web Site Properties:
TCP Port: 80
Home Directory located on this computer
Local Path: k:\inetpub\wwwroot\
Application name: Default Application

iewebcontrols.msi fails:

"The specified path '' is unavailable. The Internet Information Server might
not be running or the path exists and is redirected to another machine.
Please check the status of this virtual directory in the Internet Services
Manager."

Any ideas? Thank you.

I've just experienced the same problem. The reason was that the
networking had not been set up correctly (no cable and no valid ip
address) and hence the server was not responding to http://servername

When the network was installed, the problem was fixed.

To add on what Ian has mentioned, make sure the server does in fact
connecting to the network when installing IEWebControls (you can disconnect
the machine from the network afterward, but make sure it is plug in to a
network when installing IEWebControls).

I don't know if you really want to try a manual install, but in case you're
interested (I hope it will work to you):
1. Copy the webctrl_client folder from a known good machine (or from the
previous manual install attempt you're tried, we just need the folder and
files) to the physical root folder of the Default Website
2. Create the following directory: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Internet
Explorer WebControls" and copy Microsoft.Web.UI.WebControls.dll to the
directory
3. Install Microsoft.Web.UI.Webcontrols.dll into the Global Assembly Cache
(GAC) using the gacutil tool: gacutil -i
<Path>\Microsoft.Web.UI.WebControls.dll (you should be able to find the
gacutil from the VS.NET command prompt or from the
<Win_Root>\Microsoft.Net\Framework\<version>\ folder)
4. (Backup your registry) Create a registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\.NETFramework\AssemblyFolders\IEWebCon
trols. Set the default string value of this key to the folder where
Microsoft.Web.UI.WebControls.dll was installed, which is usually
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Internet Explorer WebControls"
5. (Back up your registry) Create a registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft Corp.\Microsoft Internet Explorer
WebControls\{12608595-E57D-472C-0836-FF025DC9905B}. Also add a new value
named "_58D095C9FAB34BFCBF4D865D40682606" = "C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Internet Explorer WebControls\"

These are what I've got so far. Good luck!

Ian and Paul,

Thank you both for your pointers.

Perhaps, I should be more explicit and clarify things.

The machine I'm working on is a stand-alone beast unconnected to anything
but the power source, i.e. no live network connection to other machines.

The machine is equipped with a network card, and when I mouse the icon in
the system tray, the tooltip shows "A network cable is unplugged."

In my ignorance of networking arcana, I'd like to believe this is not an
issue. Or is it?

Win2k3 is plain-vanilla installation, solely defaults, no customization.
Win2k3 resides on a boot disk, not the system disk.

I've just installed SharePoint Server 2003, and it seems to be running OK.

I appreciate your help. I'd like to get MCMS working.

Try to plug the machine to a network. Having a NIC on the box might not be
enough. I had customers with issue when they setting up laptop at home for
demo and ends up able to install IEWebControl until they brought the laptop
to the office and plug it to the hub. I'm not saying this is definitely the
issue, but worth a try since there seems out of option here.

The manual installation steps I've put here last week is for you to try as
well (in case you can't find a network to connect to).
