Swedish characters (å, ä, ä etc) lost when CMS is in Default Web site

| We have moved our CMS site into the default web site (port 80) because we
don't want to switch sites (port or host header) and login again between
SharePoint and CMS and the firewall only permits port 80.
SharePoint is handling the Default Web site and the CMS subsite is excluded
(and all other CMS directories according to the KB?). All works fine except
those characters. The SharePoint site at the root handles swedish characters
without problems.
I have set this in both the root .config file and the cms .config file as
well to maker sure it is utf-8:
<globalization fileEncoding="utf-8" requestEncoding="utf-8"
responseEncoding="utf-8"/>
Any ideas?
Best regards
Niklas Engfelt
