Author cms <-> siteserver on windows 2003

Hi,

We have a windows 2003 server with cms server sp1a and siteserver3 sp3
installed on in.

After we installed ss our iisadmin mmc crashed everytime we try to look att
the properties of at site. To remedy this we simply renamed sstrace.dll to
and now the snap-in work BUT when we try to start site manager we get an
error stating that "NRClient.exe unable to loacate component - The
application has failed to start because sstrace.dll was not fount.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem". Clicking ok on this
message starts site manager and everything work.

This we can live with but the same problem occours when we try to run
another application called cmsconvlogs.exe (intended to convert logs to a
more readable format for our analysis tool), but this time it is not
nrclient.exe but cmsconvlog.exe that is unable to locate the dll. This
causes a problem because our intent is to schedule this app and it wont work
if this error keeps on popping up.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question as it might as
well be an iis or ss question but I try anyhow.

Greatly appreciate any help!

Regards,
Erik

Hi Erik,

something seems to be weird on your machine:
This dll should only be used by the server side components of site server -
so from within INETINFO.EXE and not from any client side component.
Somehow this DLL seems to have registered in a way that it is loaded
whenever one of the client programs is started - not sure how this happend.

In addition the registration seems to be messed up as the DLL could not be
loaded.
Search in your registry for SSTRACE.DLL to see if you find any weird
binding.

Maybe uninstalling and reinstalling SiteServer can correct this.

Cheers,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

And thanks for your reply.

First let me clearify my earlier post, it should say "the dll could not be
located", what I wrote is something in between located and loaded, sorry
about that
That the dll cannot be found is not so odd since I've renamed it. If I set
it back to its origial name, NRclient stops complaining but the mmc starts
crashing again. Kind of a dilemma.

Actually, I have look in the registry for sstrace and only found one
occurance that I've deleted (it was under the
hklm/software/microsoft/windows/current version/shared dlls if I remember it
correctly) , but this did not help. This is also rather odd I think, one
would think that it would be found in more than one place.

The odd thing is that I've come across the exact same thing on another 2003
server but on that one we did not use cms so I could simply rename the dll
and everything was fine.

Anyhow, most likely I will follow your advice and reinstall ss and see if it
helps.

Thanks again.

Erik
