Author Pop up window in Resource Manager(Preview Icon)
Jack Liu

When a author goes to resource manager, it always pop up a window
which prompts author for user name and password.

The issue is caused by preview icon, I see the url is
http://machinename:1111/NR/rdonlyre...&thumbnail=true

If I put this url http://machinename:1111/NR/rdonlyre...0/Celebrate.GIF
(remove ?maxsize=48&thumbnail=true) in IE, it works fine. if I add the
query string, it pop up the same security window.

There was a posting by Stefan that mentioned the preview icon is
generated by a different way.

Are there any security settings for accessing or generating this icon?

Hi Jack,

no there is no different way.
The same security settings should apply - means that the permissions on the
original resource gallery are taken into account.
Your behaviour is strange - what happens if you are entering credentials?
Does this work?

Cheers,
Stefan.

Hi Stefan,
I tried to enter a user in the CMS administrators group, still not
working.

Just let you know the machine is windows server 2003 standard, CMS is
2002 with sp1a.

I have checked the D:\Program Files\Microsoft Content Management
Server\Server\rdonlyres folder in that server, there is no thumnail
image files. Most of image files has corresponding thumnail file in my
development machine.

Hi Jack,

you should open a support case for this.
I have never seen this before and have no clue about what's going on on your
box.

Cheers,
Stefan.

It looks like there are some security issues in the machine with
windows server 2003 standard.

I just contected to the same CMS database from my local machine (XP),
it works fine.

I have built 3 CMS websites, there are no such issues. It is very
weird.

If any people have similar issues in Windows Server 2003, please help
me.

I will check with out network adminstrator, if we still can't fix it,
we will contact Microsoft Australia.

Thanks Stefan.

Hi Jack,

I don't think that this is related to the OS version.
I'm sure if you install W2K3 from scratch the problem will not occur (as it
never occured on my boxes).
I assume something is misconfigured on this box.
You might want to consider to reinstall the box.

Cheers,
Stefan.

Hi Stefan,

Based on your suggestion, we built a new machine and restalled CMS,
the problem didn't appear anymore.

Definitely there is problem in the old box.Anyway that old box is just
for testing.

Thanks

Jack

Fixed.

I'd like share my experience with all peoples with the same issue.

1. Download Filemon from www.sysinternals.com. It is free

2. Run Filemon on the CMS Server

3. Get two error message
a) Process:AESecurityService
/NR/rdonlyres/ HeaderBarBlocks15hksdbehnbxogwaezpgkiigm
dweayxhwo_t32.gif
F ile not found
b) Process: W3P..,
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Content Management
server\Client\ncbmprdr.dll
access denied, user: Network service

4. It looks like CMS try to access a image thumnail, and can't find.
The web application(Default application pool) try to create a new file
by calling ncbmprdr.dll. but the application pool identity (Network
service) don't have permission to execute ncbmprdr.dll.

5. Grant IIS_WPG user group execute permission to C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Content Management server\Client. The problem is
fixed.

The problem is caused by our network adminstrators, they try to tight
the security.

Thanks the great tool Filemon.
