Hi Matt,

a channel will never load a template. Templates are bound to a posting.
So you need to browse to a channel (or a posting in the channel) you want a
new posting to reside in and then click the link to create a new posting in
the MCMS console.
Now you are able to select the template the new posting should be build of.
