Section 508 Compliance
|
|
|
| Hello all,
I'm going to be up front and say that I don't know much about a CMS other
than what it is supposed to be used for, and I have limited experience in
actually using a CMS. That being said, I'm looking at evaluating several
different content management systems with a specific set of criteria in
mind. One of these criteria is section 508 compliance. Again, I know at a
high level what "section 508 compliance" means, but I don't know what that
means when it comes to a CMS.
I've noticed that other content management systems are listed as being
"section 508 compliant" whereas the Microsoft CMS doesn't list any such
feature (at least nothing I've found on the product sheet). What does
compliance mean when it comes to a CMS? Are pages managed by a CMS marked
up by the management system to be compliant or is compliance something that
can be added to a template? Does the Microsoft CMS have section 508
compliance? I apologize if these questions are a bit off-base or obscure,
but I'm just not that familiar content management systems.
Thanks.

Hi Dln
Microsoft CMS is really a platform for content management, and a very
good one at that. Compliance with accessibility laws for the website
being delivered by the CMS platform is mainly a function of the site
build itself (i.e. the way the HTML is structured etc). One of the best
ways to get an accessible site which conforms to the relevant standards
(Section 508 defers to the Web Accessibility Initiative of the W3C) is
to use the RAPID solution accelerator. It's free of charge, sits on top
of Microsoft CMS and delivers a great starting point for
production-quality solutions. More info available here:
www.mcmsrapid.com
In summary :
MCMS+RAPID => compatible with Section 508
MCMS+Appropriately developed site => compatible with Section 508
MCMS out of the box is a platform not a complete solution.
Hope that helps,
Nick Mayhew
