Why migrate from CMS 2001 to 2002?
|

| Hi,
We are planning to migrate our websites from CMS 2001 to 2002.
1. Can you recommended a document/Website where the two are compared.
2. Is there any downloadable case study/Sample website of CMS 2002 available
on net.
Regards,
Ashish

| Hi Ashish,
next version of MCMS will most likely no longer support ASP based templates.
So migration to MCMS 2002 now and then migrating the templates to ASP.NET is
the way to go to prepare for next version of MCMS.
See the following whitepaper:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/e...igrationnet.asp
Cheers,
Stefan

| Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions.
But I am actually looking for the answer of the question "Why migrate to
MSCMS 2002? " i.e. advantages of MSCMS 2002 over MSCMS 2001.
Thanks,
Ashish

| Hi Ashish,
the major benefit would be that you are not on a dead platform.
Beside that you can use all the power, flexibility and performance benefits
of ASP.NET.
Cheers,
Stefan

| Hi Ashish,
I can tell you there are two big pros:
1) Increased performance of ASP.NET and the ability to use ASP.NET Output
Caching (much better than the fragment caching in MCMS ASP).
2) Many more features of ASP.NET and much quicker development times. Adding
new features is a snap compared to ASP, once you learn ASP.NET.
In addition, there is a lot more sample code and nifty add-on features for
MCMS that are only available in ASP.NET nowadays.
On the other hand, if your current site works fine, performs fine, and won't
require any major design upgrades, then it may not be worth moving over.
However, if you plan any significant changes, a redesign, or plan to keep
using MCMS for many years then I recommend moving to 2002 and ASP.NET. You
can also move to 2002 and still use some or all of your ASP templates while
moving parts of the site to ASP.NET in stages, if you like. Though I
recommend upgrading at one fell swoop if you can.
I won't lie to you: moving to ASP.NET from ASP is not always a fast process.
But once you get there you'll realize how much better it is and how much
more you can do.
Joel
P.S. Some good resources for MCMS and links to two books on the subject can
be found here:
http://www.wardworks.com/joel/. Stefan, Mei Ying, and I recommend the Packt
book if you're just starting out with MCMS 2002. :-)
