Directory Listing Denied
|
|
|
| Hello there,
I am very new to MCMS, this is the first day I am playing with MCMS.
I have installed MCMS on Windows 2003 Server.
It sucessfull installed.
I have 2 web sites one for MCMS site & other for MCMS SCA site
configuration.
The site for MCMS SCA works fine, when I try to browse to MCMS site it
get the error "Directory Listing Denied".
I tried possibly all the postings in google but no luck.
Anybody who has worked a solution for this please suggest.
Regards,
Srikanth Pai

| Hi Srik,
directory listing denied seems to indicate that the website is not
recognized as a MCMS managed site.
This can be caused by two different reasons:
- the ISAPI filters are loaded more than once (please double check using the
IIIS MMC in the master properties)
- the website is not configured as MCMS managed website (please double check
in SCA)
Cheers,
Stefan

| Hello Stefan,
I checked the IIS MMC for the website which is giving the error, it
does not have any ISAPI filter.
I did the following to check the same.
In IIS MMC I right cliked on the Web site and went into properties ,
then clicked on the ISAPI filters tab, I could not see any ISAPI filter
there, do I have to attach any ISAPI filter there?
Also U checked the SCA to figure out if it was a MCMS managed site it
was it displayed "Yes - ReadWrite" against the site.
Please suggest.
All your help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Srikanth Pai

| Hello Stefan,
I checked the master properties of the Web sites in IIS by right
clicking on "Web Sites" folder in the IIS, I could see that both the
MCMS files along with the ASP.net filetra are there.
MCMS HTML packager filter
ASP.Net_1.1.4322.2300
MCMS ISAPI filter

| That looks correct.
Did you check that the website is MCMS enabled in the SCA?

| Hello Stefan,
I checked the SCA to see if the site was a MCMS managed site it
was it displayed "Yes - ReadWrite" against the site.
Yes it is a MCMS enabled web site.
I am going nuts here.
Any other pointer?
I also checked that all the sites are running under the DefaultApp
pool.

| Hi Srik,
please create a new website and enable it as MCMS site using the SCA.
Does it work here?
Just to check if there is a problem with this single website.
Cheers,
Stefan

| Hello Stefan,
I actuall tried it but no luck. I get the same error.
I actuall created a new site in the IIS and then in the SCA
configuration for the MCMS, I configured that site to be a MCMS site.
I still get the same error.
I then tried unconfiguring the site which was a MCMS site to being not
a MCMS site by chaning the option to "NO" in SCA and then again
configured it to be a SCA but no luck here again?

| Hello Stefan,
I am not sure if it is my bad luck or I am missing something here.
But I tried installing it on a different system, but it still did not
work.
I am not sure if I am missing any configuration steps here.
I will try reinstalling it again and post the steps which I take.
It would be very grateful if you could suggest if I have missed any
steps.

i. Without Anonymous Access
3=2E Created a Sql database named =E2=80=9CMCSCADB=E2=80=9D
a. Granted MCSM System Account right to the database
=E2=80=9Cdb_ddladmin, db_datareader, db_datawriter
4=2E Clicked on the Setup.exe for the MCMS 2002 installation files.

5=2E The system prompted me that there are some files pending update and
suggested me to reboot, I restarted the server.
6=2E Again Repeated Step 4.
7=2E I accepted the License Agreement
8=2E Selected only =E2=80=9CCMS Server=E2=80=9D to be installed in the =E2=
=80=9CCustom Set
Up=E2=80=9D Screen, did not select Site Manager, Developer Tools, Site Stag=
er
as had read earlier that Site Manager & Site Stager in 2002 comes with
SP1a & Developer Tools are not required if Visual Studio 2003 .net is
already installed on the system.
9=2E In the Customer Information Screen entered the License Key.
10. Did not change the default Cache Size from 2048
11. Selected the option =E2=80=9CLaunch Database Configuration Application
after Installation is complete=E2=80=9D
12. Clicked the =E2=80=9CInstall Button
13. After Finishing Installation it loaded the =E2=80=9CDatabase

database created in Step 3.
20. A dialog box prompted me that the selected database already
contains MCMS Schema, I selected =E2=80=9CYes=E2=80=9D to continue.
21. It asked me if I would like to add =E2=80=9CContent Manager Server
Administrator =E2=80=9C, I clicked yes, I entered the details of the accou=

Yes - restrict
access to local server machine=E2=80=9D
24. The Installation is over.
25. It launched the SCA site but it did not work because by default the
URl had =E2=80=9Clocalhost=E2=80=9D, I changed to URL to be as follows for =
the SCA
application http://mcmssca.domain.com/NRConfig and it worked, when I
try to access the MCMS site http://mcms.domain.com/NR or
http://mcms.domain.com it says =E2=80=9CDirectory Listing Denied=E2=80=9D
26. I then went ahead and installed SP1a by double clicking on it.
27. I downloaded from the following location:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...049D3F-24D7-44=
63-A924-550E5DC34095&displaylang=3Den
Note: when I tried to install this at the first it told me that the RTM
version was not installed so I decided to install the 2002 version
before SP1a
28. It displayed the splash screen which displayed =E2=80=9CMicrosoft Conte=

34. It prompted me again that the database already contains the schema
for the MCMS.
35. It again prompted me to add an Initial MCMS Administrator, I
entered the details of the account created in step 1 a
36. It again prompted me that the user is already assigned as
Administrator.
37. It launched the SCA site but it did not work because by default the
URl had =E2=80=9Clocalhost=E2=80=9D, I changed to URL to be as follows for =

Thanks for all you help!

| Hi Srik,
ok thanks for the details.
/NR cannot be loaded accessed so this is as expected.
You used this against an existing database.
Does this existing DB have the following option enabled or disabled:
- Map Channel Name to Host Header Name
you will find this setting in the SCA.
Please don't change it! Just tell me the current value.
Cheers,
Stefa

please also enter the following URL in your browser:

Does this return anything?
If yes, then MCMS works fine on your box.

Open IIS Help, which is accessible in IIS Manager (inetmgr), and search
for topics titled Web Site Setup, Common Administrative Tasks, and
About Custom Error Messages.
I also have share point installed on this machine, do i need to install
the share point connector for MCMS?
Thanks,
Srikanth Pai

| Hi Srik,
please also open SiteManager and send me a list of all direct child channels
below /Channels.
Is there a channel named identical to the domain you used in the URL
(e.g."mcmssca.domain.com")
Cheers,
Stefan

| Hello Stefan,
I checked the Site Manager there are no channels.
I probably think when I installed the option for "Map Channel Name to
Host
Header Name " was No and further as I was reading more and more I might
have changed it to Yes.
Also for the first time I recieved a strange error.
I saw in the log folder a new folder named "HTTPERR" was created, It
has a sub folder Cluster and two log files httperr1.log and
httperr2.log, also under Cluster folder there is a clusocm.log files.
The content of the files are huge not sure if you want me to paste it
here. I am copying some important peices here the content of the whole
file looks the same
content of httperr1.log file:
2005-05-24 22:54:10 IPAddress 2410 IPAddress 80 HTTP/1.0 GET
/WebApplication2/_layouts/1033/templatepick.aspx - 1 Connection_Dropped
MSSharePointPortalAppPool
2005-05-24 23:29:16 IP Address 1804 IP Address 80 - - - - -
Timer_ConnectionIdle -
The entire file contains the same message with the number "1804"
different.
content of httperr2.log file:
#Fields: date time c-ip c-port s-ip s-port cs-version cs-method cs-uri
sc-status s-siteid s-reason s-queuename
2005-06-24 12:02:36 IP Address 4445 IP Address 80 - - - - -

/_vti_bin/sitedata.asmx - 1 Connection_Abandoned_By_AppPool
MSSharePointPortalAppPool
2005-06-24 18:51:05 IP Address 3085 IP Address 80 HTTP/1.0 GET
/default.aspx - 1 Connection_Abandoned_By_AppPool
MSSharePointPortalAppPool
2005-06-24 18:51:05 IP Address 3096 IP Address 80 HTTP/1.0 GET

2005-06-24 18:51:05 IP Address 3103 IP Address 80 HTTP/1.0 GET / 503 1

In the above messages I have replaced the actual IP Address by the text
"IP Address ".

| Hi Srik,
then everything is working as expected!
Changing this option to Yes require that there is a channel with the same
name as the domain name.
The content of this channel will be used to render the content.
If the channel does not exist MCMS passes the request down to IIS and IIS
does not find any items either.
So it returns the message that directory listing is denied as there are no
default documents in the root of the website.
It seems you are not familiar with the basic concepts of MCMS.
I would recommend to do the tutorial in the MCMS documentation first.
In addition I would suggest to have a look at the following book which is
will help you to go from beginner to expert:

| Hello Stefan,
You are absolutely right, I am very new to MCMS. I also have a copy of
the book which you have written and have been reading through it and
experimenting here.
I just installed MCMS as per the installtion instructions found on the
Microsoft site.
I expected both the sites:
http://mcmssca.domain.com/NRConfig
and
http://mcms.domain.com/NR
to work by default.
but they are not working and that is my concern.
Once you install MCMS are these sites supposed to be working or is the
second site which is created supposed to be a framework to create new
MCMS sites?
Please help me understand this.
Thanks again.

| Hi Srik,
as indicated: http://mcms.domain.com/NR will never work!
That is not a valid URL.
http://mcmssca.domain.com/NRConfig should work if you installed the SCA on
this website.
The URL is defined based on the channel structure in your database.
If your database does not have a channel structure the only URL that will
hit MCMS is
http://mcms.domain.com/channels.
And this URL will not work if you have the "map channel name to host header
name" feature enabled. then you need to have a channel with the name
"mcms.domain.com" below the /Channels root channel.
Cheers,
Stefan

| Hello Stefan,
Thanks I got it right now.
I appreciate all you help .
I created channels and then tried to open a project in Visual Studio
..net uisng http://mcms.domain.com/<<projectname>>, I got the error
"Cannot MCMS-enable a project that is on a Remote Computer"
I made the changes in the Developer.xml file also.
I read on google a couple of postings which said that I would have to
install mcms locally on my machine and then create the visual studio
project.
I guess I would then have to create the MCMSSCA site and MCMS site
locally also right?
Both the sites (MCMS & MCMSSCA) which I have created have the same TCP
Port 80 but a different host name, can i use the same host names for
the sites which I create locally on my machine or should I create
different host names?
Also since I am not using the Default Web site and am creating new Web
Sites in the IIS, while creating the projects in Visual Studio should I
still use http://localhost/<<project_name>> or
http://mcms.domain.com/<<project_name>>
Please suggest.
Thanks,
Srikanth Pai

| Stefan [MSFT] 2005-08-23, 2:48 am |
| Hi Srik,
that is correct.
It is impossible to use VS.NET against any other domain name as localhost.
The VS.NET developer tools can only work agsint the local machine and are
also only officially supported against the default website running on port
80.
This limiation comes due to the fact that MCMS recommends Windows XP as
developer operating system and this OS does not support websites other than
the default website.
It is indeed possible to work with VS.NET and the MCMS develper tools
against a different website using the hints in the following article but it
is not possible to use a different hostname than localhost:
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...6a/MCMS+2002+-+(complete)+FAQ.htm#AF0A8BBF-1488-450F-ADD1-E555312ADEC9

Stefan
