Multiple virtual cms site on a single web server
|

| Hi,
I'm facing the problem of hosting different virtual cms sites on a
single web server.
We only have one ip address to use. Developers used an environment
where "Map host headers to channel names" was not
enabled. Is it really necessary to enable this feature in a production
environment, or can I just use host headers to
have different IIS virtual sites? For us it would represent some
overhead. What are the issues if we don't enable them? Is SSL possible?
Any other issues? For us it would be better to use different virtual
sites with host headers, because we could use different application
pools for different cms sites.
Any advice or past experience about that would be really appreciated
Thanks in advance
Francesco

| Hi Francesco,
only with the feature enabled you will be able to host multiple sites on the
server.
Otherwise all site will show the same content.
Cheers,
Stefan

| Hi Stefan, I don't understand this.
Consider this hierarchy in the CMS Channels:
--Channels
------------------Site1HomeChannel
------------------Site2HomeChannel
If I define two websites with IIS host headers like this:
ip-address tcp port host header value
---------------------------------------------------------------------------=
---
192.168.2.161 80 www.website1.com
192.168.2.161 80 www.website2.com
And under website1 I deploy the virtual directory relative to the Site1
Channel Hierarchy, and under website2 I deploy the virtual directory
relative to Site2 Channel Hierarchy, isn't it possible to access
separately to the two CMS websites?
Site1: www.website1.com/Site1HomeChannel
Site2: www.website2.com/Site2HomeChannel
Why should I see the same content?
Thanks, Francesco

| Hi Francesco,
sure this will work!
But usually you will connect using www.website1.com or www.website2.com
And be aware that www.website1.com/Site1HomeChannel will server the same
content as www.website2.com/Site1HomeChannel
Cheers,
Stefan

| Hi Stefan,
ok this sounds clear to me.
Is there any issue in contemporarily using IIS Host Headers and the
host header mapping features of CMS? I ask this because I would like to
be able to separate application pools for different CMS virtual sites,
and, because I have only one ip address to use, the only way to have
several virtual web sites (and several application pools) is using IIS
Host Headers.
Thanks in advance for your kindness.
Francesco.

| Hi fscali,
you need to check in your code about the root channel so in site1 you need
to map in the code that the root channel is Site1HomeChannel and the same
for site2 so when you browse you will get the content based on the root
channel which will solve the problem.
