MCMS database for new site
|
|

| Hi Stefan,
I would like to develop a second MCMS site, and I believe I need to rerun
DCA to do this.
My current site shares it's database with the MCMS system database.
I would like the new site to also share the main MCMS database.
Where can I see the configuration of which site uses which database? I
thought it might be in SCA, but I can see no sign of it there.
I presume I can deploy the sites separately even though they both use the
same (shared) MCMS database, and that each deployment will not contain any
trace of the other site. Can you confirm this is correct?
Does it matter if I ran SCA before running DCA? I got no error when I did
this.
Thanks a lot

| Hello Martin,
There can only be one MCMS database per installation of MCMS.
To develop a second web site there is no need to run the DCA, unless you
want each site to be stored in a different database. (i.e. physical seperation
of data).
If this scenario you would need to use the DCA to switch between databases.
The SCA displays the current database in the MCMS Database section in the
header of all tabs:
Server: details the server used to host the database - although if you are
using a non default SQL instance the SCA can have trouble displaying it as
the characters are limited. If you select the text and move the mouse it
will scroll to display the full text.
NAME: details the database name
You can deploy seperate site to production using the Site Deployment facilities
in Site Manager.
You don't need to run SCA before DCA.

| Hi Spencer,
Thanks for the reply.
My understanding is that the central MCMS database can be used for two
roles:
1) Generic MCMS stuff
2) Site Specific content
Further, I believe it is the second use that can be put in a separate
database, and it is that second use I am talking about in this thread.
Therefore I am trying to see in SCA where *each* site's content is held.
If I had 3 sites, 2 had their content in the "generic" MCMS database, and 1
had it's content in a separate database, how would this be shown in SCA?
How does SCA show/distinguish between the central database and the content
database?
Thanks for your help.

| Hello Martin,
There can only ever be one MCMS database active, and this holds both MCMS
configuration (e.g. members of the MCMS Administrators Role Group) and site
content.
"Active" means the database that is used by all elements of MCMS, the applications,
SCA, etc.
Because of this, the SCA doesn't display where each site's content is held
in the way you describe.
There is no distinction between a "central" and a "content" database.
