Console disappears
|
|
|
| Hi all,
This is a weird one...
I have two extra copies of the default console (renamed
specifically for my app). I use one of the copies on one
template, the other copy on a second template.
I have removed certain options that don't apply for each
of the templates. I just need to make the options as
simple as I can.
Anyway, what happens is...
I go into create new page. (This bypasses the template
selection and goes straight to a template, to be
populated.)
I click save and exit.
The console is still there.
I then go back into the page by clicking Edit.
I then click exit (no saving).
The console is still there.
Now, I go to another channel, either parent, grandparent,
or one at the side of parent/grandparent and the console
disappears altogethor. This is NOT JUST my console, but
the default console on other pages that I have no
connection to.
At this point, I am still logged on. I can't get the
console back on any page until I log off and back on
again.
I then tried this exact same thing on other channels with
the normal default console, however the results are as
expected. (the console is still available)
Can anyone give me any pointers?
Thanks.
Dave Colliver.

| Hi Stefan,
I thought we were using Forms Authentication. You might
be able to help me here... I always thought Windows
Authentication popped up a windows box, forms auth used a
web form. Is this the case?
We are using a web form which currently verifies against
windows.
As for the answer (on the FAQ), I am not getting a 404
and I can't see a 500 happening.
I don't know what is meant by the last paragraph in the
FAQ.
Funnily enough though, this morning, we had a home worker
mention the exact same issue. This is on a different
server to what I was working on. (They were also working
in a different area).
Thanks for any further assistance you can give me.
Regards,
Dave Colliver.

| Hi Dave,
please check your web.config to identify which authentication for you are
using.
The 404 and 500 would show up in the IIS log.
Please double check here.
Cheers,
Stefan.

| Hi again,
I have now had a look at the log files.
As I thought, no 500 errors, but there are 404, but only
for an image. Could this be causing it? If it is, then I
think poor design, as images are the most likely culprit
on any site.
(The image is for a spacer file.)
Can you claify if this is the culprit, also can you
clarify the Windows Authentication question I have raised?
Thanks for your help.
Best regards,
Dave Colliver.

| Hi Stefan,
Web.Config shows authentication mode=windows, so I guess
it is windows. I always thought windows mode popped up a

Anyhow, the 500 error that I can see which was around the
time of when it started is...

The only 404 errors are missing images.
I am not sure what is going on here, as there is no error
presented to the client browser.
What else can I look for?
Thanks.

| Hi Dave,
any 404 you see can cause this.
Either disable anonymous access or if this is not an option change the
authentication to forms based authentication.
Cheers,
Stefan

| Hi,
What is the likely issues with doing either of these?
Can Forms auth connect to the Windows SAM or do I need to
connect to a SQL database?
To disable anonymous acess, what would I do?
Thanks for your time.

Dave Colliver.

| Hi Dave,
forms authentication can connect to the Windows SAM.
To disable anonymous access use the IIS MMC, select the properties of the
web site, go to the securty tab and disable anonymous access for the site.
But ensure that you enable anonymous access for the /NR and /MCMS virtual
directories as these require anonymous access.
Cheers,
Stefan.

| Hi,
This is getting really weird now...
I have fixed the 404 errors and checked the logs. So far
today, I have no 500 errors and the 404 errors are not
related to my work.
However, it still does it.
I have read up about forms auth in the Microsoft Content
Management Server 2002 book. At the moment, it looks
quite a lot to do, plus the person I need to speak to
about isn't here at the moment, so until that happens, I
cannot put in the change. So, I fix the errors that cause
the issue and I still have the issue.
The weird bit though is I can still get the console to
disappear, but navigating around the site, then come
back, the console magically re-appears, even though I
have not logged off or on again. If, as the FAQ states,
that it is due to my authentication getting lost, then
how come it returns?
Puzzled.
Regards,
Dave Colliver.

| Hi Dave,
acutally implementing forma authentication is a 2liner!
Just replace the authentication type to use forms in the web.config and
configure the login form coming with mcms to be used:
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms name="MyCookieName" path="/"
loginUrl="/NR/System/Access/ManualLogin.asp" protection="All" timeout="30">
</forms>
</authentication>
<authorization>
<allow users="*" />
</authorization>
Cheers,
Stefan.

Done that, still have the problem.
Closed browser, re-opened a new browser. Tried again.
Still does it.

Narrowed it down even further...
If I switch to edit, edit a posting, click exit without
saving, then go up say, 2 channels.. I lose the console
when I come back.
However, if before going up the two channels, I click
the "switch to live site", then navigate as before, I
don't lose the console.
Weird.
Regards.

| Hi Dave,
you should open a support case for this.
We need to look in a network monitor trace to understand what's going on
here.
Cheers,
Stefan.

| OK, how do we set up a second entry point if we're using host headers? I
can't figure out how I can get another address to point at the current MCMS
site...

| Hi Dave,
either use a different IP or a different port.
Or use a different host header name and the approach listed here:

| Hi Stefan
Thanks for your help on this!
We're trying the ISAPI filter route that you mentioned, so I've now got 2
IIS sites with host headers eg. 'intranet.xx.com' and 'intranetadmin.xx.com'.
Browsing to 'intranetadmin.xx.com' (which has annonymous access disabled)
prompts for login and shows the 'intranet.xx.com' site correctly, with the
admin console.
I've now got these 2 issues:
1. The links in my navigation change depending on whether I'm in edit or
live mode. In live they still show 'intranet.xx.com', but in edit mode they
show 'intranetadmin.xx.com' - presumably they should be showing the admin
address all the time or there will be no way for admin users to browse the
site. FYI I'm using CmsHttpContext.RootChannel.Path to get the root for my
nav.
2. I'm also finding that if I switch to edit mode then try to navigate to
another page, the console still disappears (even though I am still authorised
and see hidden channels etc.)
Any ideas?
Cheers

| Hi,
1) you need to install the hotfix in the article I sent you below to address
this issue or MCMS 2002 SP2:
2) sounds as if the defaultconsole.ascx is not included on the affected
template files - or as if the required querystring parameter (wbcmode and
wbcpurpose) are not included in the URL.
Cheers,
Stefan

| Hi
You're right - the WBCMODE parameter is being missed off of my link urls. Do
you have any idea why that might be happening and what I might need to do to
fix it? Could this be related to the hotfix you mentioned as well (I'm in the
process of obtaining this, so it hasn't been applied yet)?
Cheers

| Hi Stefan
I just iterate through the channel items and use ChannelItem.Url to get the
link.
On the other matter - I've installed the hotfix but the links on the admin
site still show the absolute urls. Any ideas? I guess that one will probably
need us to open a support query...
Cheers

| Hi DG,
only links inside the current site will show up as relative links.
Links to other sites will have to show up as absolute links as relative
links would be incorrect.
If you experience the problem with site-local links please open a support
case for this.
Cheers,
Stefan
