I am observing strange behavior in that authors are having to enter
their credentials 3 times before the challenge response goes away. Has
anyone seen this behavior before and if so, are there any suggested
solutions out there?

Hi Ratman,

that is the default behavior if the credentials are not accepted.
Alternativly it might be that the credentials are requested from different
servers (e.g. if images in the page are located on a different server).
