Are Resources in DB or File System???

If I upolad 100 PDF files into the Resource Gallery, are they going into the
SQL server database or onto a file system some place where I know have to be
concerned with those files consuming disk space? If file system, then where?
If database then are there cache files or some other file system implication
of adding more resources (GIF, JPG, PDF, etc)
