Backward compatibility of CMS
|
|
|
| Hi,
I have an existing application using CMS 2002 Service Pack 1a, running
on Windows 2000 server, with a backend SQL 2000. This is currently
running in the production (live) environment.
I am required to setup a new staging environment and have been
informed by that I will be given a Windows 2003 server, with a backend
SQL 2005.
The problem I am facing is that currently, Microsoft has packaged CMS
into Sharepoint 2007, and CMS 2002 is not available in the market
(please correct me if I am wrong). If I were to purchase Sharepoint
2007 and develop/customise the existing application (after a migration
of the existing application from CMS 2002 to Sharepoint 2007), I am
worried that there will be issues when I need to migrate the
application back to the production environment (CMS 2002).
To illustrate the transition of the application's CMS versions:
CMS 2002 ---> Sharepoint 2007 ---> CMS 2002
Is anyone aware of any migration issues that might arise? Or perhaps,
do I need to migrate the production CMS 2002 to service pack 2 first,
before it can be compatible with Sharepoint 2007? Is there a
possibility of a compatibility with the .NET framework which CMS uses?
I know some people would question me as to why can't the production
environment just be migrated to Sharepoint 2007? The reason is that it
is running on a 3rd party vendor of my client, and due to security and
red tape issues, it would take too long to get it setup on their side,
and the project doesn't offer the luxury of that timeline.
I would greatly appreciate any comments or suggestions on this matter.
Thank you.
Best Regards,
Derek

| Hi Derek,
this is indeed not possible.
Btw: SP1a is no longer supported. You have to be on MCMS 2002 SP2 since
January 9th, 2007.
Cheers,
Stefan

| Stefan,
I have posted a similar question, as I have MCMS 2002 sp1 and am wondering
if I can apply todays security update (MS07-018). In checking the lifecycle
site, it looks like only support for MCMS 2001 expired in January. Is that
not right?

| Hi Stefan,
Thanks so much for your answer.
However, would it be possible for you to further elaborate as to why
it isn't possible please?
I would need to document the rationale behind this decision.
Is it mainly related to the different versions of ASP.NET which CMS
supports at different service packs?
Thanks again for your help.
Best Regards,
Derek

| Hi Stefan,
Thanks so much for your reply.
However, would it be possible for you to further elaborate as to why
this cannot be done please?
Is it possibly due to the different ASP.NET versions that are
supported in each of the service pack releases?
It would certainly help me to better understand the situation and also
to document the rationale behind the decision.
Thanks again.
Best Regards,
Derek

| Hi Nicole,
support for SP1 has ended July 11th, 2006.
As SP1 is no longer supported there are also no security updates for SP1
being released.
The only supported service pack level for MCMS 2002 since January this year
is SP2.
You need to upgrade to SP2 and install the security update afterwards.
Cheers,
Stefan

| Hi Derek,
there is no way to migrate content from MOSS 2007 to CMS 2002.
Cheers,
Stefan
