Sick and tired of the M I bloody 5 spam!!! - Can't Google do
|

| Hi all,
I bet that you, like me are sick and tired of all this M I bloody 5
spam that is flooding these news groups and de-valuing them! Every
time one comes in I use the "Report this message" facility, yet
nothing appears to ever happen/change!
Can we all get together and pressure Google to do something about it?
Anyone got any ideas on how to do something that will be effective?
The newsgroups that I can see that are affected are:
microsoft.public.pt.sql, microsoft.public.pt.windowsxp,
microsoft.public.ru.russian.server,
microsoft.public.sharepoint.portalserver,
microsoft.public.win32.programmer.rtc
uk.misc, alt.video.dvdr, microsoft.public.cmserver.general,
microsoft.public.de.german.windowsxp.gruppen.richtlinien,
microsoft.public.de.german.windowsxp.applications
microsoft.public.de.german.windowsxp.hardware

A lot more groups than that are effected. I picked him up in aus.politics.
If you look at the headers he is currently sending from
altopia.com email abuse@altopia.com to get him kicked off their server
He was sending from newsdemon I complained to them and he has been
kicked off their system.
I am sure when he is kicked off altopia he will find another Usenet
server to transmit from. The more time he spends looking for new
servers the less time he has transmit more crap.

I know there are aloads more groups effected. With the limit of being
able to send to 5 groups at a time, this makes it harder.
At the moment the posts are coming from Yahoo and Hotmail free
accounts. A better way to stop it in my opinion is to put on a
regular expression filter or get this kind of thing added to a SPAM
filter list (assuming the news groups employ spam filtering
technology?).

I seem to remember that one of his posts had a abuse@google.com

Where would one discuss how to prevent his postings, or prevent
seeing them?

Why not use Bayesian filters? they would probably adopt and
prevent him from simply using five rather than 5.

No they are not. They are only the email address that he is using as a
handle (I doubt they are real). He is sending from altopia.com.
From your header you are sending from google groups using Forte Agent.

There is an easy way to eliminate these messages create a Cross posting
filter. A rule that says that if the message has been posted in more
than say 4 newsgroups then do not show it.
I am sure Forte Agent can do it. I am using Thunderbird and it can't
do it.
I use Pan news reader on another computer it was easy to set up a
crossposting filter and it works well.
http://pan.rebelbase.com/
You should have a look at Pan, I think it is better than Forte Agent and
it is free.

Regarding the former, nothing can be done about that.
Regarding the latter: read up on filters, aka killfiling.
Here's another idea: how about retaliating, and flooding the perp's
inbox with a sea of messages? You can do so through his website, at
http://www.five.org.uk/feedback.php. (Be sure to use a bogus email
address or throwaway email account, like yahoo, hotmail, etc.)

Create a filter on every variation of spaces in the word "Persecution",
that works :-)

Like a lot of people, I'm in a business environment and they do not
allow me to install 'non standard' applications such as news readers.
As such I'm 'stuck' with the Web versions, such as Google groups. As
Google Groups is a Google application, I do not see why I can't raise
this 'question' against Google to do something about the problem. Be
that implementing a 'filter' facility, or somehow removing them from
their servers (or doing something when a "Report this Message" is made
would also be nice!) ..frankly I don't really mind. I am sure that I
am in the exact same 'boat' as many, many hundreds of others.

Saw this in another group:
I use this one in Agent - and don't see any of that MI5 crap...
subject: {M[',-`. ]I[',-`. ]5[',-`. ]P}
(Requires Agent, of course.)

I propose that MI5 is after Mike because of his cross-posting spam ...
