Author Hyperthreading license issue

I've asked this question before, but didn't really get a
good answer. Standard edition license is restricted to 2
processors. I have CS2002 Standard Edition installed on a
dual Pentium 4 Hyperthreaded machine. A hyperthreaded
processor acts like two processors, therefore, my machine
acts like a Quad (you actually see 4 processors in Task
Manager).

Unfortunately, CS2002 can decipher between physical and
virtual processors, so standard edition immediately fails
due to exceeding the two processor limit of the license.
You can disable the hyperthreading feature, which is what
we did, so that software only sees the two physical
processors and the license restriction can be met.

Is there a way to configure CS2002 standard edition (or
any Microsoft product for that matter) to run under
hyperthreading? I've found no documentation regarding how
licensing handles "virtual" processors, so it seems like I
should be able to get the speed advantage of running a
quad, but still meet the license restriction of two
physical processors. Any thoughts, articles, etc. on this
topic?

Hi Jeremy,

At this time CS2002 Standard can not tell the difference between virtual
and physical processors. If you would like to use Hyper-threading you will
need to use CS2002 Enterprise.

I was afraid of that. I would assume that the same issue
probably applies to other standard edition products, such
as CMS, Sql Server, etc...can anybody confirm?

Thanks!

For SQL Server the license information can be found at;
www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/SQLonHTT.doc

This pretty much states that you only need 1 license per Physical processor

For CMS Standard you can install on a multiproc box, but it will actually
only use 1 of them. You will need to choose the processor to bind the CMS
thread to during install. CMS Enterprise supports unlimited processors.
