Minimum Hardware Question

| I've have found Microsofts minimum hardware requirements but trying to
figure out what I can get by with if I were to co-locate we've built a site
using .net and think that the features that commerce server offers would
compliment what were doing. However this is a startup site without the funds
to follow the 9 server, 3 tier setup that is in the whitepapers. I know it
might not be recommended but would 2 servers suffice? 1 commerce/IIS Server
and 1 SQL Server?
I'm trying to think scalability as well. Any help to point me in the right
direction would be greatly appreciated. Are there people out there that can
consult on a small level or is this mainly for a large enterprise basis and
nobody deals with smaller setups?
Thanks in advance,
Fred Baker

| We have a two server setup...it's interesting.
I guess it all depends on how many hits and what features you want to
use...lots of users and certain features are processor intensive.
You should contact MS, and ask them. Just create a post with a title "Paging
Microsoft" or something like that. They'll respond pretty quickly.

| Hi Fred,
It really depends on the traffic you are planning on taking in, you can
always start with 1 web box and 1 SQL box, then add additional web boxes as
you grow. It would be best to deploy the boxes like described in the
secure deployment guides with the Web serve behind a firewall with 80 and
443 open if you are using SSL, then the SQL Server behind the web boxes
with 1433 open.

| Fred,
1 ws and 1 db is a good start. That might not be best if you want high
availability, redundancy, etc. The site I usually deploy start with a 3
box ws (2 load balanced for site, 1 for bizdesk & cs) and 2 boxes for sql
clustering. hardware sizing could get pretty tricky considering the number
of variables that could come into play: concurrency, conversion, # users, #
of catalog items, db hits, etc. You could check out MSIB on MS's site.
They have some pretty good documents explaining sizing. HP.com has a simple
"tool" on sizing MSIB as well. Hope this helps.
