hello,

we plan to install a webshop based on commerce server 2002. the shop
contains about 3.5 mio. books. the database will be queried on almost all
pages (for top tens etc.). the load will be very low (10-100 users per
hour).

we plan to install the following hardware and software, but we have never
worked with commerce server before and we don't find case studies with
nearly as many items as we have, so we are very unsure:

Webserver/Commerce Server:
***********************
Hardware:
- processor: 1 (or 2?) 3gig intel xeon
- ram: 2 (or 4?) gb
- hd: 3 x scsi 15000rpm, each 36gb, raid 5

Software:
- windows server 2003 standard
- commerce server 2002 standard

MS SQL Server:
*************
Hardware:
- processor: 1 (or 2?) 3 gig intel xeon
- ram: 2 (or 3?) gb
- hd: 3 x scsi 15000rpm, each 36gb, raid 5

Software:
- windows server 2003 standard
- ms sql server 2000 standard

Questions:
*********
1. Does this config make sense???

2. We have learned that the bigger part of the database should fit into the
cache on the webserver - which would mean that we would use more than 4 gigs
of ram there, but we would like to avoid the advanced server. is this ok?

3. Is it possible to use windows server 2003 web edition for one or both
machines? would this have any impact on any function of commerce server?

thanks a lot
marc

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...02/default.mspx

Hope this helps

thanks for your help, we know this website, but in their tests they are
working with product catalogs up to 100'000 products. we are working with
3.5 mio. products, which is quite a difference... ;-)

Hi Marc, depending on how you structure the catalog, it might be out of our
scale test.

You email bounced ... I'd be happy to follow up if I had your real mail
(maybe type it out as: bopel at somedomain dot/period com)

Thanks, Caesar.

Hi Marc, I followed up with our catalog PM and the scale test actually
reached 5 million products. So this is still within our design envelope.

The tests that were run on the web site uses 100K catalog sizes. However,
you can extrapolate this to your catalog sizing needs. The main point to
consider is that an operation imposes a resource cost. If you take the
resource cost and scale it to your capacity needs, you should be within the
ballpark.

Hope this helps, Caesar.
