What is a best practice to track external paid ads coming into a
Commerce Server 2002 site?

Paid ads on Overture, Google, or maybe banner ads on a portal? I would
like to not only track a referral from a site like Overture, but the
term used and whether it generated any revenue. The report would list
Overture and its revenue/clicks generated, then the ability to drill
down to the individual terms and whether they generated
revenue/clicks.

I am not a developer, but would like to convey the best practices to
the developers so I appreciate "laymens" terms where possible.

Hi, there,

Not quite sure I understand the scenario (for example, how do you figure out the revenue generated). But from commerce server content selection framework (so called CSF) point of
view, we provide a close loop solution to target, display, capture the event, analysis, report and adjust targetting based on ad performance (e.g. clicks).

A detailed doc about best practice of CSF system can be found in commerce server documentation (shipped with product), Commerce Server Tutorial section (refer to closing the
loop with CS System and B2C tutorial, Marketing Campaign parts).

Samples in Commerce server doc all use the scenarios that ads are hosted in your own site. However, in your situation, which is hosted by external portal, you can use CS bizdesk to
generate ads and push them to the portals. You probably won't be able to use CSF targeting functionalilty since ad delivery is controlled by portal sites. But because ad content and
redirect url are generated by CS, you should be able to do the event (click event for example) capture, analysis and report.
