Author Commerce server components for developers?

Hi,

We (a long time ago) contracted out a company to build an ecomm site for us,
which they built on a machine we provided for them. They built the thing,
and installed commerce server 2000 on the machine.

But for me, as a developer, I dont wish to work on a production machine but
commerce server is too expensive to justify purchasing a copy just for
development.

Are there any workarounds for this? Like limited functionality components
that would allow me to at least use stuff like Commerce.Dictionary for
testing?

Sorry if the question is naive, I dont know much about commerce server
licensing and such...

Cheers,
Bryan

The Developer Edition is available for about $500 per developer. Is that
still too steep for your budget?

Isn't it in MSDN Universal as well?
