| I am trying to setup the MSIB 2.5 with windows 2003 server. My first
question is can I use standard addition of windows 2003
for my Web server, Business desk server and ISA firewall
serveror does it have to be enterprise addition? Also
I need some help with deployment scenarios. What is the minimal
amount of cpu's you can use to get started. Right now I have (2) 2.8
1gig mem rackmounts for web server,1 2.4 512 rack server, 1 dual
1gig 2 gig mem rack server and 1 1.6 gig 1 gig mem rack server. I was
planning on having one ISA firewall, 2 webservers and a sql database.
I think I want all of my processor speed in my web server...is this
right? Any help would be very much appreciated or even links to
where I can find more info out on setting up MSIB 2.5. Thanks!

| Hi,
The MSIB 2.5 kit has the deployment documents that'd help you setup on Win
2003.
You're correct in your positioning of the 4 servers. You should additionally
looking at setting up the SQL Server to also act as the AD Server first. The
domain a/c's are very critical in setting up the multi-server config. The
steps are detailed in the MSIB 2.5 documentation.
Win2K3 Standard would work fine (WLBS is available on Win2k3 Std) and you'd
want to load balance your front-end servers.
So I'd use the 2 2.8 MHz servers for the front-end, the dual, 2 Gig for the
DB and the other one for the ISA.... Also I'd not recommend you stick the ISA
between the Db & front-end, instead if you have multiple NIC ports the on
the front-end use one for your Internet connectivity and the second one
across an isolated hub to connect to SQL... that way you isolate the
middle-teir traffic between the CS middle-tier components and SQL away from
you customer traffic... you also
1. segragate the SQL away from direct Internet access
2. do not expose your AD directly to the Internet
Hope this helps.

| Ravi Shankar thank you so much for your help. I guess I didn't explan
myself very well. Heres what I got:
Internet
|
ISA Server
|
Linksys 1000 switch
______| ______
| |
| |
web 1 web 2
|_____________|
|
Linksys 100 switch
|
|
SQL Database/Active Directory
I have internet come through my ISA server, then it hits the switch
which both the web server are connected two on their own nics. Then
the web servers have two private nic cards that the sql database is
connected to. All of this is seperated by linksys switches. I bought
another dual 2.8 gig xeon server today to add to the bunch.
Microsoft suggests having two ISA firewalls. Is this needed?

| In the config you've depicted, the ISA would become the single point of
failure so you need a clustered/highly-availale f/w to prevent impact on
business. If you're not short of funds then I'd recommend a load balancer for
the web1 - web 2 instead of using WLBS will not load the web servers with
the NLBS load..
