Author publishing pdfs with nice url

Hi,

I have a requirement to publish pdf files on a CMS web site. I have this
requirement because it allows fine control of the formatting of the document
which remains in tact once on the web. In addition my client wants to be
able to email pdf file directly instead of emailing a url to a pdf, and then
requiring someone to click on the link.

I have currently managed this requirement by having the pdf be a resource
which is then linked to from a posting.

The downside of this approach is that the url of the pdf is short lived
which means it can't be found by search engines.

I had also embedded the pdf in a posting by having it as an embedded object,
but apparently this has negative consequences on the internet too.

My question is, how can I publish pdfs on a cms web site so that they have
long lasting urls? eg www.mysite.com/page1.pdf

I'm prepared to write an HTTP filter if that will do, but I would like the
pdfs to know and honour the channel hierarchy just as postings do.

Any tips much appreciated.

Thank you.
Martin
