Catagory pages load slowly
|
|
| Smitty200 2005-08-17, 8:49 pm |
| Our catagory pages display 8 items per page and then page numbers at
the top to display the each page of 8 items. When the number of pages
moves above 4-5 for a category the page takes a long time to load. If
there is 4 or less pages load time is acceptable. I am new to
commerce server and have inherited site that was coded off shore.
Should I look at the SQL tables for indexing optimization first? Is
there any suggestions for what i should be looking for.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

| Are you using CS2000 or CS2002 ?
In ordr to monitor SQL performance you should run sql profiler and monitor
the SQL activity. There can be two things happening
1. Some sql calls are taking more time
2. A lot of calls are being made. This might be an issue with the way the
code is trying to get and render information on your site.
You should also consider using caching on your site so that once a category
page is loaded subsequent access to the page fetch the data from the cache
without hitting the sql server.

| We are using CS2002.
The code base I am dealing with was written before I got here. I know
.net but have no experience with Commerce server.
Is there a book you could recommend that would help me with the
commerce server side of things.

| I would recommend the CS2002 online help.
I have a blog http://blogs.msdn.com/vinayakt which contains useful
information on catalog system
You need to get familiar with the objects in the
Microsoft.CommerceServer.Runtime.dll
CS2002 also ships a sample Retail2002 site whcih you can use to understand
the commerce server objects
There are also some sample siteltes in the SDK folder that can help you
with the programming model and the various commerce server objects
Finally you can also download the Starter Site whcih you can customize for
your needs. This site will alos help you understand Commerce Server
Incase you get stuck you can post to the newsgroups and someone might be
able to help you
All the best!

| Smitty,
I'd recommend picking up DevPartner Community Edition from Compuware or
JetBrains dotTrace Profiler if the application is based on a .NET platform.
They will give you good inside into which call is taking the most time which
you can then use to focus your search further. dotTrace is probably the
least bulky from an install/setup perspective and DevParter is free.
Cheers,
Colin
