Hi,
Anyone aware of possible downtime in a production system when using the
Commerce Server Staging to copy catalog from a staging area to a production.
What happens if someone request a product that is not in the cache while the
catalog table is getting copied/transferred? I assume the request is somehow
queued/locked until the job is done but wanted to know if anybody knew for
sure. My assumption is the process is transacted so there should be much of
an impact or wait but wanted to confirm.

Hi Pascal,

Staging should not interrupt site availability as business data types are
non transactional by default.
However if you are using transactional mode of catalog import this could
affect the availability of your site as all the products in the catalog
will be transacted as a whole. In general, you should be using incremental
mode of catalog staging once a full import is done for better performance.

In a high traffic site where there is virtually little or no "low traffic
hour", there is no possible concurrency issues? When the catalog is
transferred from Staging to Production, does the Staging component locks the
product table or do something to prevent a read while the catalog data is
written? This might be low level question but I am dealing with a customer
with a strong technical team.

Hi Pascal,

The answer to your question is yes, if Transactional Catalog Staging option
is specified for a business data project involving Catalog business data.
Then staging will perform the import operation under a transaction. This
will cause locking of the relevant data until the transaction commits or
aborts. During the transaction concurrent reads of the affected data would
block.
