| Hi,
My webshop should run on more than one server, all using a shared
stand-alone SQL2005 server. I install CS on every server (using separated
admin-databases), but when I extract the pup on a new server, it overrides
all my configuration, databases, productcatalog, transactions, profiles etc.
- which makes it virtually impossible to attach a new server while the
webshop is running live? So what is the correct procedure for a distributed
installation of CS, using a shared database?

| Hi Lars,
There are two types of databases at play:
* Administrative databases - MSCS_Admin and MSCS_CatalogScratch
* Application databases - ProductCatalog, Marketing, Transactions,
TransactionConfig, Profiles, etc...
When you install Commerce Server for the first time you select the location
for the adminstrative databases. The administrative database contains the
configuration information for each application running on each Commerce
Server application server which is "attached" to it. If you are running
Standard Edition, you are limited to two application servers attached to any
given administrative database. As such one site will be able to span at
most two web/application servers. Under Enterprise and Developer Edition
(for development and testing of course) you can attach an unlimited number
of web/application servers.
After you have installed Commerce Server and attached it to an
administrative database then you will be ready to deploy an application
using a Site Package. When you do so you will have the option of placing
those databases in any given database server. When you are ready to deploy
your web application to a second server you will need to choose a Custom
Unpack option. This will allow you to add a second instance of a site while
preserving the first instance and the pre-existing databases.
I hope that gives you some insight into the process. For more I would
highly recommend giving the deployment section of the documentation a read.
