Are there any tech notes or tutorials of integrating an Inventory system
(within SQL Server) with Commerce Server using BizTalk.

Is this the Commerce Server 2007 Inventory system you are talking about ?

Yes, I would like to integrate the Inventory System in CS 2007 with our
in-house Inventory system that resides in SQL.

There are two ways to accomplish this.

1) Use the CS2007 Inventory Adapter and BTS2006 to "pull" inventory data
from your backend system periodically.

2) Use a SQL sproc to update the CS2007 inventory tables from data in your
backend system.

I've done both and so far, they both work well.

Have you looked into the XML Import/export features of Inevntory system?

Jeff,

My original thought was to use SQL Stored Procedures, SSIS etc for all my
integrations (Catalog, Inventory, Profiles and Orders) however I was told
this not recommended and supported by Microsoft :-(

Chris,

All I can say to the "not supported" is "do what makes the best sense". I'm
currently using a sproc in some cases and the Inventory Adapter in other
cases. The structure of the inventory table(s) used by CS2007 is pretty
simple and updating it from another SQL table is also pretty simple.

For "Orders" , "Catalog" and "Profiles" integration I use the BizTalk
Adapters since they work great in my B2B scenario and they are easier than
using SSIS (in my personal opinion, but my SQL developers tend to disagree).

Chris,

I guess it depends on how much flexibility you want. The support boundaries
are a bit fuzzy with Commerce Server given that you are meant to extend it
in many ways. The support scenario will likely turn to a "best effort"
scenario when custom code is in effect. I would echo Jeff's recommendation
of going to the table if that is the easiest way to do it. For example,
we're writing additional sprocs to sit beside in the out-of-the-box sprocs
to provide some additional inventory related functionality.

As well, when dealing with support they will often ask you to try and
isolate the problem in the starter site or in a new site scenario. It's a
prety fair ask and will often help you focus on the root cause as well.

Cheers,
Colin
