Migrate CS 2000/2002 Order data to CS 2007 using Migration Tool
|
|
|
| http://blogs.msdn.com/vkumar/archiv.../16/667939.aspx suggests that
the Commerce Server migration tool can be used to migrate Orders data from
CS 2000 to 2007. Assuming we're interested in migrating only the Orders
data, could the relevant 2000 tables be moved to a non-production SQL Server
that didn't have CS 2000 or 2007 installed, and perform the migration from
the 2000 to 2007 tables there? Or would the migration tool require CS 2007
or 2000 to be installed? We're trying to minimize downtime and would like
to avoid installing the migration tool in our production 2000 and 2007
environments.
Thanks in advance.

| Hi Mark,
I will go to confirm this issue with our Commerce group. If there is any
update, I will follow up here to let you know.
Please wait for my message.
Thanks and have a great weekend!

| Hi Mark,
I've confirmed Commerce Server 2007 must be installed, the migration tool
cannot be run directly against a SQL database / system without Commerce
Server installed (it will not work).
To minimize downtime, this would be easiest with a separate environment for
the upgrade. CS2007 can be rolled out after the data is migrated, site
functionality and applications have been verified. There should be a
cut-off when no more orders are processed through the old system, and the
CS2007 environment is online.
I hope the info helps. Please let me know if you have further question.
Have a nice day.
Sincerely,
WenJun Zhang

| Thanks WenJun. I have a few follow-up questions.
1. The url that I referenced in my original post
(http://blogs.msdn.com/vkumar/archiv.../16/667939.aspx) I believe was
written by one of the CS development team, Kumar Vinod. Two quotes stick
out:
"Orders migration is not an in place migration."
"Tool creates the CS2007 orders system schema in the same database as
CS2002."
I believe this contradicts your findings. Is Kumar referring to another
tool? Looking at a server with CS 2007 installed, C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Commerce Server 2007\Sdk\Samples\SiteCreate\ looks relevant
but I'm not seeing the actual tool referenced. C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Commerce Server 2007\Tools contains tools, but nothing appears relevant.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Commerce Server 2007\Upgrade is the Upgrade
Wizard that appears be geared to the "in place" upgrade. Running the tool
directly isn't useful as it finds nothing to upgrade. Help!?
2. Ultimately we're looking for a recommendation on how to migrate the Order
data based on our environment:
A) We have a production CS 2000 Server (3 clustered web servers, 1
separate SQL Server)
B) We are re-writing the site completely from scratch using CS 2007.
C) We need to migrate the Orders data.
D) We have no interest in installing a migration tool on our CS 2000
production servers.
E) We're not excited about running the migration from our CS 2007
production servers.
F) We envisioned using some intermediary server automating the
migration, and pushing the converted data to the production CS 2007 server
when we were ready to go live.
G) We want to automate the data migration as much as humanly possible so
we can run the migration *many* times prior to going live.
Thanks again for your help.

| Hi Mark,
The tool referred by Kumar is just Commerce Server 2007 Upgrade Wizard.
Most of the details can be found in the following document:
Microsoft Commerce Server 2007 Migration Guide
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...F9F7-C849-4B24-
92E5-FABADE8AE400&displaylang=en
Basically there are two approaches for data migration:
You can pack up a site from CS2002 and then UnPup into new databases using
CS2007. After unpacking completes, you may need to run the migration tool
in order to complete the migration.
You can also uninstall CS2002, install CS2007 and then upgrade your data in
place (by running the migration tool).
According to your description, looks like the first method to migrate data
to an intermediary server is more approriate in your environment. The
migration tool also has the functionality to only migrate data from
failure/exception list when being rerun.
I'll go to further discuss with our product group about if there is any
known issue or problem for migrating data from CS2000 (not 2002) to CS2007.
If there is any update on this, I will post here to let you know. Also if
you have further question, please feel free to contact me offline at:
wjzhang@online.microsoft.com (remove online.)
Furthermore, in terms of advice this is pretty much all we have in the
newsgroup. If you need more detailed assistance or help on working out a
solid migration plan based on your special environement. You can consider
contacting our Advisory Services or Customer Support Service(CSS) via
phone. They will be the most qualified and effective resource for you to
leverage:
