Hello-

So i have the commerce server and import wizard on one box and the sql
server on another. I need to save the DTS packages and schedule them to run
nightly. However, they only save locally and where I am running the DTS
package, we have no sql box.

What is the best way to import data into the datawarehouse database in this
scenari. Run the import tool on my local dev environment saving the DTS
packages. Then copy these packages to the production sql box and schedule
them from there?

Thanks
Jordan

Correction. This "However, they only save locally and where I am running the
DTS package, we have no sql box" should be - "However, they only save locally
and where I am running the DW import wizard, we have no sql box. Therefore,
we cannot save the DTS packages when we run the DW import wizard."

The package should be saved on the SQL server that the DW is defined on,
which is the same server that it runs on when you choose run immediately.

If you're saving to a SQL 2005 box, you'll need the SQL 2000 DTS Designer
package installed on the SQL box before you can open the package.

Thanks. So then should I copy the DW Imort Wizard exe over to the SQL box and
run it from there? Because it sounds like run immediately and saving the
package only work with a machine that has a local sql server and this one
does not.

Would copying the DW import wizard exe over to the sql box work OR how else
would we import this data for reporting?

thanks for your time!

You shouldn't have to copy the wizard. The wizard gets the connection
string to the SQL server from the Admin database.

When you run, the package is run on the SQL server machine. Are you seeing
it fail during the run? Are there any errors in the event log?

I had only tried this on a machine that already had SQL on the unpup
machine, which is not your scenario. I just tried your scenario and I see
the same issue. The code always tries to save the DTS package to the local
machine.

For your scenario, you'll need to install CS on the DW machine (to register
the DTS tasks) and configure it to point at the existing Admin db (rather
than create a new one). Then run the import wizard from the DW machine.

Hi Brian,

I posted the same problem in the Alan Faulker Blog
(http://blogs.msdn.com/akfaulkner/ar...om-webcast.aspx).

By your answer I have to install de Commerce Server in the DW Machine,
right? But I'm working in a production environment and will be very dificult
to justify the instalation of CS on the SQL Server machine.

There are any workaround for this?

......
Original Post in Alan Faulkner's Blog :

Hi Alan,

I watched your webcast and I developed the Classes and Views for my Weekly
Typed Properties in my Purchase Orders(after do the
OrderObjectMappings.xml).

All this works fine in my Commerce Developer Environment (WebServer and SQL
Server in the same machine). Now I have to do this in an Enterprise Cenario.

The DTS Import Wizard fails in the start, showing this message : "Faild to
retrive DTS Task Information". In my cenario I have 2 WebServer
(ProductionServer and StagingServer) and two SQL Server 2K5 (Commerce
DataBase and DW/BI Database).

In the WebServer I dont have any SQL Server installed.

What I need to run the DTS Task in this environment?
.....
