Is there any way to set authentication credentials in Catalog Manager. Our
catalog manager fails when behind a proxy requiring authentication (same
error message as when catalog web service is down). For the record, the
manager works fine when not behind this proxy.

Any help is highly appreciated!

There is no way to set authentication credentials in catalog manager for a
proxy currently. You can use run as to set those credentials. It will
basically run under the credentials of the logged in user. The next version
of commerce server supports this functionality.
