Removing base catalog name from virtual catalog product ID
|
|
|
| I've created a virtual catalog to be used to represent products from one
division of our company. I've not set any rules for this virtual catalog as I
determine the best way to move forward with this but something has come up
that could be an impediment to moving forward using a virtual catalog.
The product id is returning the base catalog name in parenthesis. Since the
base catalog is from another division and these entities handle different
markets it would be unacceptable to have "Company Division A"s catalog name
tagged to "Company Division B"s product IDs.
Why is this happening? And what might I do to remove the base catalog name
from the virtual catalog product Id?
Thanks,

| The Basecatalogname cannot be removed from the productid of the virtual
catalog
See this article for more information on virtual catalog name mangling
http://blogs.msdn.com/vinayakt/arch.../22/431744.aspx
What is the issue with having the mangled productid. I would assume it is
an internal piece of information and you can use the display name of the
product to display the product.
Thanks

| Well the original devlopers of our site used a drill down scheme which breaks
when you truncate the base catalog name onto the product id. More importantly
our company sells to end users from a wide variety of vendors. The company
also has a division which manufactues items.
The problem I'm working on a web site for manufacturing division which will
service the dealer network. The selling division of the company is in direct
competition with these dealers so having the base name of the base catalog
which so happens to be the name of the selling company. Therefore I cannot go
foward unless I rework lots of code to use another key other than the product
ID.
To work around this I'm going to attempt to rename the base catalog to a
name that does not reveal the selling company name, example "Base".
I'm attempting to do this by exporting the catalog as XML and changing the
catalog name in the XML file.
Any comments on this attempted work around?

| Have you tried accessing the OrigProductId, OrigVariantId and
OrigCategoryName
These will contain the unmunged names or the productids and categorynames
from the base catalog.
Thanks
