Thank you Sudha. Much appreciated.
My include list is about 20 000 products. I now understand it would be
better to just select them from the base catalog dataset and add them to the
virtual catalog dataset.

I have a question about rules: If I materialize the virtual catalogs, the
products are written to a physical virtual catalog table for that particular
virtual catalog. Are the Include rules still executed when browsing or are
they then bypassed as they had already been executed when materializing the
catalog and are by implication now all included?
