| Andrew,
The number of active connections will depend largely on how much traffic
your site receives, how many servers are in your web farm, etc. It's
different from environment to environment, but 20 to 250 active connections
seems like a reasonable number.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that 42 billion active connections
appearing in this panel is probably a bug. I haven't seen this one
personally, but it wouldn't be the first time that perfmon counters were
rendering incorrectly. Does this happen on seemingly random machines at any
given time, or are you seeing these metrics on specific boxes? This sort of
thing might be an unexpected side effect from a hotfix that has only been
applied on a specifc server. In any case, you could probably open up a
ticket with Microsoft Support to correct this issue.
