modifying .htaccess

| If I modify the .htaccess file in the root dir on a server
running Front Page ext 2002 with Apache, do I need to
remove the extensions, modify the .htaccess file and then
reinstall the extensions?
I need to add deny access IP addresses to the web site.

| Why do you want to deny IP addresses??
Every query to the server is via an IP address.
Also, by denying an IP address you could deny a bunch of people using AOL
because AOL uses proxy IP's
Deny one IP address and you deny a whole block of people.
( not that I'm an AOL fan )
