Author Search page not working

I cannot get the search page on my website to work correctly. When I run a search query it returns the following error:

"User: please report details to this site's webmaster.
Webmaster: please see the server's application event log for more details."

I go into the wwwroot of the server and the folder where my web resides and delete the service.lck file lives. I delete the service.lck file and the search engine seems to work fine. One problem, it requires me to log in. That should not happen. If I
close out of the browser and return to the site at a later time the search engine does not work and the service.lck file has been recreated at wwwroot. What can I do to resolve both of these issues?

MarK;
Can you tell us the OS you're running, the version of FrontPage and whether
you're running a disk-based web or a server-based web?

Thanks,
