Windows Sever 2003 web edition and FP2002 extensions search
|

| When I did the initial installation I had not realized that WAIS was not
available with Windows 2003. So Index server was disabled. I've enabled
Indexing and set it as permitted web extension. Now the search form shows
up in the browser.
What steps are required to get the information in the FP extended webs
cataloged so that results are found? The FP/STS documentation made it seem
like the webs should get added to the indexing automatically, but that isn't
happening.
There is a catalog "Web" under Indexing Service, but no directories were
displayed. The drop down on the Web Tracking tab lists all the virtual
servers. If I select the one I am doing the testing and apply that,
restart Indexing, then try the search form, it will work. But that is only
a single site.
Do I need to create a separate catalog for each website that will use the FP
search component? (That doesn't seem scalable.)
Can someone provide a step-by-step for enabling search with multiple virtual
servers?
Or is there something broken?

| Hi Hari,
Thank you for the response. I wasn't sure it that information (FP2000/NT4)
was applicable to FP2002/Windows 2003.
That appears to indicate that a separate Index Server catalog *is* required
for each FrontPage site. I know that there were practical performance
limits to the number of catalogs with the initial FP2000/NT4 configuration
since each catalog meant a separate process needed to be running. And I
think there may even have been some hard limits as well.
Can you provide any information about these issues with respect the current
platform? Also any guidance for what a hosting provider can do to
accomodate dozens, if not hundreds of FrontPage extended sites on a single
server? The process to set up the catalogs isn't the problem -- but the
number of processes that would be required is ming boggling.
