Author Extensions error message.....

Has anyone seen this error and what can be done to remedy the situation? I am
unable to upload my website that has been been revised and uploaded many,
many times over the past 2 years. Now this error report pops up about 2
minutes into the upload process:

"The server sent a response which FrontPage could not parse. If you are
trying to connect to a FrontPage server, check with the servers administrator
to make sure the FrontPage server extensions are installed properly."

My web server has tried to help me. They are insisting nothing is wrong on
their end. This is their reply:

"The error message occurs when a file associated with FrontPage on your
local system is corrupted. I would also like to inform you that there are no
issues with the server hosting your account."

To which they explained:

"The error message you receive occurs because the configuration file that
FrontPage uses to verify content has already been created in the _vti_cnf
folder even though you have not imported the file. Because the configuration
file now contains an error, FrontPage cannot import the corrected file until
the damaged file is removed from the Web."

I have backed up my files to a cd. I've tried repairing and republishing.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
