ok whenever you add an image as a background it gets tiled by default. a
while ago i read an inside frontpage newsletter that linked to an article
explaining how to make an image fill the whole background of a page without
it tiling it. does anyone know how to do this or have a link to that article?

You can not stretch an image (w/o distortion)
You can prevent it from tiling in some browsers using CSS or background properties watermark
The only way to fill the screen is to redo your image to be 1600x1200 px

oh i see. well after plsaying around with it for an hour or so i figured it
out. go to format menu then select style, double click on the body tag then
select border from the dropdown list then go to the shading tab browse to the
image you want to use and under the box marked repeat select no repeat.
obviously yes the image does have to be of sufficiant size for it to show
full size but the above procedure does stop the tiling which is what i was
after sorry about that.
